CNC practice field

The edge burned. The fix was to feed faster.

Overview

A 7' × 7' practice field for the 2025–26 ASME Student Design Competition, cut from 4' × 8' MDF sheets. I programmed it in Fusion 360 CAM and ran the MultiCam 5000 myself, with the shop's manager supervising. Early passes burned the edge; raising the feed rate fixed it. The field stayed flat all season.

The job

Our team needed a 7' × 7' practice field for the 2025–26 ASME Student Design Competition, cut from 4' × 8' MDF sheets. I programmed the cuts in Fusion 360 CAM and ran the MultiCam 5000 myself, with the shop's manager supervising. The machine ran on the shop's older software, so the job had to go through that to actually cut.

The burned edge

Early passes burned the edge. Raising the feed rate fixed it: less dwell per tooth, less heat in the cut.

Result

The field stayed flat all season.
